Journeyman Electrician
The Journeyman Electrician plays a critical role in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems within data centers.
This position demands advanced technical proficiency with low- and medium-voltage systems, strict compliance with safety standards and electrical codes, and the capability to mentor and guide apprentices.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Execute the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical infrastructure, including wiring, lighting, control systems, and equipment such as panels, transformers, breakers, and motor control centers in commercial, institutional, and data center environments.
- Conduct routine and emergency maintenance on medium- and high-voltage switchgear and breakers, including racking, inspections, and Megger testing for insulation resistance, ensuring reliable power distribution to critical loads.
- Plan and determine the installation methods and sequences for various electrical fixtures and systems, including AC/DC motors, control panels, PLCs, switches, and transformers.
- Diagnose and repair intricate electrical and electronic control circuits, as well as protection and control wiring, through comprehensive analysis of blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Program and interface with PLCs for seamless sequence control, interlock systems, and fault logic, validating functionality through simulation and testing, while meticulously documenting all activities in compliance with NEC and OSHA standards.
- Utilize electrical testing equipment (voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, insulation testers, and integrated circuit testers) to identify equipment malfunction and implement durable corrective actions.
- Install, maintain, and inspect electrical components across high-reliability environments—including hospitals, research facilities, manufacturing lines, and data centers—minimizing downtime and supporting uninterrupted operations.
- Mentor apprentice electricians, emphasizing safe work practices, effective installation techniques, and maintenance procedures, while ensuring adherence to LOTO, NFPA 70E, and site-specific safety protocols.
- Ensure all projects and service calls align with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local jurisdictional codes, and client specifications, while diligently maintaining comprehensive records of maintenance, testing, and repairs.
**Qualifications:**
- Completion of a state-recognized electrical apprenticeship program (e.g., IEC Chesapeake) with a valid Journeyman Electrician license (MD/DC or equivalent).
- Proven experience in commercial, institutional, and/or data center electrical installations, specifically with high-voltage panel work and critical power distribution systems.
- Ability to operate independently or collaboratively within fast-paced environments and to accommodate varied shifts (including days, nights, weekends, and holidays) as dictated by operational needs.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills, with a strong emphasis on safety, reliability, and customer service.
**Certifications & Clearances:**
- Active Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent electrical training and experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
