Your Role The Activity Center Assistant Leader – Outdoor/Nature Programs & Camps duties will include but not be limited to: Supervision of participants (youth or adult) involved in programs and camps. Provide manual labor for programs, camps and events. Assist with preparing and implementing of age-appropriate outdoor nature-based and/or environmental-themed based activities for programs, camps, and events. Assist with preparing and implementing of age-appropriate outdoor recreational programs such as kayaking, archery, hiking and fishing programs. Assist with managing and maintaining of equipment and supplies. Adhere to program, camp and event safety protocols. Respond and follow procedures in emergency situations. Support positive youth development and empower youth. Create an environment which is inclusive for all participants. Maintain confidentiality of participants, employees, and organization information. Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms. Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: High school or GED, 18 years old or older, plus three (3) months or at least 400 hours of related experience including programming and experience with individuals with special needs in such positions as personal assistant/attendant, youth leader, mentor, camp counselor, teacher/substitute, coach, recreation program leader, church youth leader, scout leader, or child care provider, either in a paid or volunteer capacity; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some positions may require a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver?s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. As a condition of employment, all new employees must have a criminal history record investigation, take a TB Screening, and attend mandatory trainings.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position may have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.
Experience working outdoors
Experience working with youth/adult participants
Experience supporting outdoor recreation and nature based programs
Experience camp experiences
Special Instructions:
This pool of applicants may fill positions for multiple locations.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.
Average scheduled hours up to 40 hours per week during summer. Position runs mid-May through mid-August.
This is a temporary seasonal position: Employment will end by August 22, 2025
Requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.
Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

V RS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
