Position: Inside Machinist

Job Location: Norfolk VA

Hutco Branch: Portsmouth VA

Rate of Pay: $26 per hour

Standard Schedule: 6:00 AM – 2:45 PM (Monday–Friday)

• Some weekend work may be required

Position Summary

Hutco Inc. is hiring Inside Machinists at the J3 and J4 levels for our Inside Machine Shop. These team members will set up and operate machines to fabricate or refurbish metal and nonmetal parts with high precision. This includes working with conventional machines, conducting measurements, and assembling final components.

Journeyperson Guidelines

Journeyperson 4 (J4)

• Fully independent operation of conventional and special-purpose machines (mills, lathes, grinders, jig borers, shapers)
• Plans and sets up job runs using accurate machining parameters
• Verifies tolerances using precision instruments (micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks)
• Interprets blueprints, manuals, specs, and drawings
• Installs replacement parts and tests completed assemblies
• Performs advanced alignment and assembly using jigs, fixtures, and tables
• Strong command of shop math, layout techniques, and material machinability

Journeyperson 3 (J3)

• Operates and sets up various machines independently
• Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications
• Monitors machine operation and makes necessary adjustments
• Performs basic troubleshooting and assembly of machined parts
• Uses a full range of measuring tools for accuracy
• Requires minimal supervision

Journeyperson 2

• Operates standard shop equipment (engine lathe, turret lathe, boring mill, etc.)
• Demonstrates moderate blueprint reading and layout skill
• Brings working knowledge of shop theory and math
• Familiar with cutting tools, micrometers, and calipers
• Works with limited supervision

Journeyperson 1

• Performs machine operations under supervision
• Understands machine shop fundamentals and blueprint basics
• Operates drill press, milling machines, and grinders
• Has basic hand tools relevant to machinist duties

Requirements

• Experience in shipyard or industrial settings preferred
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Familiarity with safety and quality procedures
• Willingness to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied shop conditions
