Job Description

This role leads grading crews on a variety of commercial and infrastructure projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and high‑quality site preparation. You will oversee daily field operations, operate heavy civil equipment, interpret plans and grade stakes, and coordinate closely with project leadership to deliver work that meets strict specifications, timelines, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a grading crew of approximately 2–5 team members to complete site preparation and earthwork activities safely and efficiently.
  • Oversee and personally operate heavy civil machinery, including excavators, rollers, skid steers, dozers, haul trucks, loaders, and related equipment.
  • Work on a wide range of project types such as data centers, subdivisions, hospitals, roads, apartment complexes, and other commercial sites.
  • Interpret civil site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to establish accurate elevations, slopes, and contours for grading operations.
  • Perform layout and set grade using lasers, GPS systems, and other surveying tools, verifying accuracy throughout the project.
  • Coordinate daily tasks, equipment needs, and workflow with project managers and site supervisors to keep projects on schedule.
  • Monitor production, quality, and adherence to project specifications, adjusting plans and methods as needed to meet standards and deadlines.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings with the crew and enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations on the job site.
  • Identify and troubleshoot site issues such as unexpected ground conditions, conflicts with utilities, or design discrepancies, and communicate changes to management and crew.
  • Maintain accurate records of labor, materials, equipment usage, and key project milestones to support project tracking and reporting.
  • Implement and oversee erosion control, clearing, and grading best practices to protect the site and surrounding environment.
  • Train, mentor, and coach crew members to build their skills, improve efficiency, and promote teamwork and accountability.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and other site personnel to ensure smooth integration of grading activities with overall project work.
  • Apply strong administrative skills to complete required documentation, logs, and safety reports in a timely and organized manner.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 5+ years of strong experience in excavation, grading, and site development.
  • At least 4+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction or heavy civil environment.
  • Proficiency with a wide range of heavy equipment, including excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers, skid steers, haul trucks, and other heavy civil machinery.
  • Demonstrated experience in grading, erosion control, clearing, and utility construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, blueprints, and construction documents.
  • Experience using GPS grade control systems and lasers for layout and grade setting.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, direct, and motivate crews and subcontractors.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and commitment to enforcing safety policies on site.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • CPR certification.
  • Solid administrative skills, including recordkeeping, documentation, and reporting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with project managers, supervisors, and crew members.
  • Bilingual communication skills (preferred for interacting with diverse crews and stakeholders).

  • Expereince in heavy civil construction and utility construction environments.
  • Experience coordinating multiple pieces of equipment and crews on active job sites.
  • Ability to adapt to changing field conditions and adjust grading plans as needed.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and sound judgment in fast‑paced field environments.

Work Environment

This is a fully on‑site role working on a variety of commercial and heavy civil projects within approximately a 35‑mile radius. Typical projects include data centers, commercial developments, subdivisions, hospitals, roads, apartment complexes, and other large‑scale sites. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, generally from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an expected 50‑hour workweek. You will work outdoors in active construction environments, operating and coordinating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers, skid steers, and haul trucks. The role involves regular use of lasers, GPS grade control systems, and other surveying tools to set and verify grade. Conditions may include varying weather, uneven terrain, and active job sites with multiple trades present, requiring a strong focus on safety and adherence to OSHA standards. Dress typically aligns with a construction environment, including appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment suitable for heavy civil and commercial job sites.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Montpelier, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $36.00/hr.
