Highway Engineering Department Manager
Location: Virginia (Hybrid/On-Site Options Available)
A well-established and growing civil engineering firm in Virginia is seeking an experienced Highway Engineering Department Manager to lead and expand its transportation practice. This is a senior leadership role for a motivated engineer who enjoys combining technical excellence, team leadership, and client engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Highway/Transportation Engineering Department, including staff development, mentoring, and performance management
- Oversee planning, design, and delivery of roadway and highway projects for VDOT, local municipalities, and regional agencies
- Serve as Engineer of Record and provide technical oversight on roadway geometry, drainage, traffic control, and safety improvements
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and quality control standards
- Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic growth, proposals, and business development
- Maintain strong relationships with VDOT, local agencies, and key clients
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia (or ability to obtain)
- 10+ years of highway/roadway design experience, including VDOT projects
- Prior experience managing teams and leading transportation projects
- Strong knowledge of VDOT standards, AASHTO, and roadway design software
- Proven communication, leadership, and client-facing skills
