Software Engineer III
Introduction to Position:
A Software Engineer III’s work is generally independent (requiring low supervision) and collaborative (coaching and mentoring other engineers) in nature. They contribute to complex aspects of projects, and are typically responsible for leading new product discovery engagements, more complex custom product build engagements, and consulting focused engagements.
A Software Engineer III is an advanced role, filled by employees with previous experience as a software engineer who have proven their ability to: successfully work autonomously, effectively manage up, and proactively leverage appropriate existing resources to support on-going delivery. Promotion to this role indicates a team member has demonstrated repeat successes in various aspects of software engineering at Modea and can effectively coach other team members and clients on those successes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with project team(s) to identify client requirements
- Participate in, and sometimes lead, standard process ceremonies, such as regular stand-ups, backlog grooming, planning, demos, retrospectives, etc.
- Produce well-designed, testable, efficient code under close supervision
- Ensure code produced meets standards for security, quality, and accessibility
- Integrate software components into a fully functional software system
- Deploying applications to internal and external environments
- Troubleshooting, debugging, maintaining, and improving existing software
- Participate in learning activities such as pairing with other developers, online video instruction, conferences, etc.
- Mentoring of more junior developers on project and functional team
- Developing technical documentation to guide future software development projects, onboarding new developers, or for hand-off to the client’s technical team
- Performs other duties as assigned that are reasonably within scope of this position.
Critical Competencies:
As a Software Engineer III (SEIII), you will receive high-level goals and little to no supervision or help is required when breaking down projects into work. Provides a heavy level of mentorship and is expected to develop others into more senior engineers.
Capable of handling any scope within their practice. Will work on multiple features at a time, potentially across multiple projects.
When receiving work, less direction or review is required. Goals can be provided, and an SEIII is generally capable of breaking up steps and navigating to the desired outcomes with no assistance.
Advanced knowledge of engineering practices and processes that is applied to a wide variety of problems within their practice. Capable of learning new technologies quickly due to a thorough understanding of fundamentals and experience in teaching themselves new technologies.
Can effectively manage client expectations and comfortably handles more difficult conversations. Can inform a project schedule when provided high-level goals. Also capable of delegating projects to others in order to hit deadlines.
Can effectively lead the engineering portion of the discovery phase of a project. Documentation that is produced is useful to the client and to the implementation team for the project. Sets the example for more junior engineers to follow.
Typically a low number of feature rework due to quality issues.
Minimum Requirements:
- Senior Software Engineers are expected to have approximately 5 years of relevant experience.
- Senior Software Engineers are expected to have experience developing applications for Content Management Systems.
Work environment:
Modeans are able to work at any location in Virginia, Tennessee, or North Carolina, unless as otherwise required by job responsibilities. We offer modern offices located in Nashville, TN and Blacksburg, VA. Our office provides an indoor space with moderate temperatures and noise levels. This allows employees to choose a fully-office, fully-remote, or hybrid work experience. Employees may occasionally need to travel to our offices or other locations for items such as training or client visits. We will also provide employees with tools to do their job at home as well as in the office.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position during the duration of the workday. Individuals must have the ability to constantly operate a computer. Must have the ability to converse with and exchange information to clients and coworkers both in person and through a computer. Capable of occasionally transporting items of 10 lbs or less to and from the office.
