Electronic Technician II
- Contractors: Monitor and inspect contractor work. Perform visual and electronic testing and final system evaluation after maintenance, upgrades and, or repairs are completed by contractors.
- Customer Inquiries: Answer calls from the public, VDOT, and law enforcement agencies concerning questions, problems, or the need for repair of traffic signals and traffic signal systems.
- Documentation: Prepare routine and technical reports, logs and documentation. Instruct and train staff on the proper use and operation of technical equipment and safety. Report deficiencies noted to supervisor. Respond during off-duty hours for emergencies, equipment failures, backup support, inclement weather, etc.
- Maintain Records: Assist Contract Administrator in tracking inspection and contractor work records. Provide reports to supervisor, detailing accomplishments and required activities. Prepare weekly and/or daily reports for submittal.
- Responsive Troubleshooting and Repair: Monitor maintenance activities in assigned area. Perform responsive maintenance to include testing and troubleshooting at system level, unit level, board level and component level.
- Routine Work, First and Emergency Response: Perform routine operations or equipment verifications. Perform first response work related to testing and diagnostics and providing same day repair (when parts are available). Respond to emergency call-outs during scheduled call-out assignment.
- Spare Equipment and Inventory Control: Maintain spare units and replacement parts to ensure problems and repairs are done during first response. Return defective or non-working equipment to shop within 24 hrs., create a repair ticket and attach to unit for identification. Use PDA I Bar code scanner system to track equipment through inventory system. Assist shop staff in bench repairs and gathering information needed to purchase needed parts or spare equipment. Maintain assigned equipment such as vehicles, tools, and test equipment ensuring no loss or damage due to negligence or misuse.
- Time, Data Entry, and Documentation: Perform time and data entry into financial tracking system as well as into the maintenance database to account for daily repair and productive time. Maintain documentation for equipment testing, troubleshooting and repair. Provide checklists or reports as required.
- Traffic Signal Repairs: Oversee and perform 24 hour 'on call' emergency repair and preventative maintenance on traffic signal control equipment, hardware, and associated devices. Provide training and guidance to technical staff in the operation of computerized traffic signal system equipment as well as testing of new traffic signal equipment.
- Traffic Signals: Install and modify traffic signals and traffic signal systems, including hardwire and radio interconnect data transmission equipment.
- Work Order Management and Training and System Backups: Perform work order requests as required based on the priority statuses. Develop and update instruction manuals and provide staff training as needed. Develop schedule and perform system software database backups of all facility systems to support timely recovery resulting from system failures and disaster incidents.
- Ability to climb towers up to 120 feet, operate a bucket truck, and to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.

- Ability to design, modify and fabricate electronic equipment, and read and interpret electronic schematics and manuals.

- Ability to use electronic diagnostic tools and equipment, as well as hand and power tools.
- Ability to work at heights and in heavy traffic conditions.
- Considerable knowledge and experience in the electronics field including troubleshooting, circuit analysis, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards related to electronic and ITS equipment.
- Knowledge of electrical and electronic applications.
- Knowledge of instrumentation, motor controls, telecommunication (including radio and fiber equipment), RF and video equipment, microprocessors, computers, and peripherals.
- Knowledge of traffic operations, principles, and applications.
- Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to problem solve, and manage time efficiently.
- Skill in equipment repair, fabrication and operation of electronic test equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and web based applications.
- Working knowledge of installation, maint and repair of canopy signage, traffic signal and detection equip, CCTV, RFID, microprocessors, servers, video cameras and imaging equip, and intercom sys.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written form.
- Ability to design, modify and fabricate electronic equipment; read and interpret electronic schematics, manuals and circuit boards and use to troubleshoot signal equipment.
- Ability to develop and maintain Excel and data access spreadsheets and programs.
- Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of signals, components, use required tools, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and in inclement weather.
- Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies within a specified period.
- Knowledge of electrical and electronic applications.
- Knowledge of instrumentation, motor controls, telecommunication (including radio and fiber equipment), RF and video equipment, microprocessors, computers and peripherals.
- Knowledge of traffic operations, principles, and applications.
- Skill in equipment fabrication, operation, and repair of electronic test equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Electronics, or related field desired.
- Commercial Driver's License
- Experience in the electrical trade.
- Experience in traffic signal repair and maintenance.
- IMSA Roadway Lighting certification
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level I or II technician certification(s).
- Progressively responsible experience in traffic signal installation, modifications, and system timings.
- Substantial experience in the electronic field to include electronic board and component level repairs. Inventory experience for stocking and tracking inventory.
