Job Title: Operating Engineer
Job Description
The primary function of an Operating Engineer is to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment across various systems. This role requires technical expertise in at least one craft area such as Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations, and the ability to be multi-skilled in others to effectively complete daily and weekly assignments.
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, monitoring, and repairs to the Mechanical, Plumbing, Structural, Furniture, Fire Life Safety, and Control systems to keep the facility and building systems up to applicable standards.
- Maintain responsibility for facility services, preventive maintenance, purchasing, inventory control, contracted maintenance, general maintenance, and technical proficiency.
- Clean, inspect, calibrate, and change parts to maintain the HVAC systems and associated equipment at optimum performance levels.
- Record readings and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
- Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials, and maintain a clean and safe workplace.
- Perform periodic checks of tool and instrument inventory.
- Monitor the quality and pricing of maintenance work performed by outside contractors.
- Comply with all safety procedures, maintaining good housekeeping and safety of work areas, and recognize danger and safety hazards, proposing methods to eliminate them.
Essential Skills
- Building engineer experience.
- Possession of EPA CFC and EPA 608 Type II Certification.
- 2-4 years of experience in maintaining and repairing commercial building systems.
- Ability to analyze and determine the cause of problems in Commercial or Industrial Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC systems, and take corrective action.
- Working knowledge of computer applications, including Word and Excel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Preferred: Two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC.

Work Environment
Work is conducted at the Northrop Grumman building, Monday to Friday, on the first shift from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fairfax, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $34.00 - $36.00/hr.
