Working under a person-centered model of care, the RN Nursing Supervisor is a compassionate and engaged leader who manages the daily operations of assigned living units at The Group Home. This role ensures that every individual receives exceptional clinical and personal care—24 hours a day, 365 days a year—while fostering a fun, kind, and collaborative work environment.
The RN Nursing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing nursing activities, supporting and developing staff, coordinating care transitions, and ensuring compliance with best practices. This hands-on role combines strong clinical oversight with a commitment to creating a supportive and joyful experience for both staff and residents. This position will include working 50% of the time as an RN floor nurse.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead, Manage, and Accountability
- Cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment where staff and individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered.
- Participates in the hiring and training of new staff, coaching, improvement plans, and performance evaluations.
- Implement policies and procedures that prioritize the safety, well-being, and dignity of both staff and clients.
- Assess training needs and engage staff in meaningful learning experiences to ensure compliance with licensing requirements.
- Provide collaborative supervision, ensuring daily routines align with regulatory standards while maintaining a positive and engaging work culture.
- Manage payroll, timekeeping, and overtime to ensure fairness and efficiency.
- Lead by example, inspiring teamwork, professionalism, and a shared commitment to excellence.
Program Development and Oversight
- Updates the DON regularly on all staff and resident issues of significance
- Plans and evaluates the overall nursing needs of the individuals served at the group home
- ·Assist with coordination of new admissions and discharges
- · Participates in healthcare ISP
- Assists unit nurses in coordinating with hospital staff on emergency discharges to a hospital and readmission back to the group home.
- Ensures assigned staff compliance with facility and departmental policies and procedures to provide the highest standards of practice.
- Foster a fun, engaging, and enriching home environment where individuals can thrive
- Assist in coordination of all emergency evacuation procedures
- Identifies necessary changes in the program planning, monitoring systems, and staff training curriculum within the Home and advocates for these changes.
- Stay informed through regular training to ensure compliance and promote ongoing professional growth.
- Serves as backup for staff work schedules
- Other duties as assigned while continuing to embrace the values of kindness, compassion, and person-centered care.
Risk Management/Incident Reporting
- Manage incident reporting and response in the CHRIS reporting system
- Collaborate with group home leadership team to develop and update policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, always keeping the safety and well-being of those we serve in mind.
- Ensures assigned staff compliance with facility and departmental policies and procedures to provide the highest standards of practice.
Floor Nurse Responsibilities:
The Floor Nurse role provides specialized nursing care and treatments for critically fragile individuals with special medical and physical needs. All services will be provided under a person-centered model of care and in support of each individual’s support plan (ISP).
- Conduct daily physical assessments of assigned individuals.
- Administer medications, treatments and tube feedings as prescribed by the physician.
- Receive, transcribe and implement physician’s orders using the electronic health record.
- Manage and provide care to tracheostomy-dependent
- Intervene appropriately in the event of emergencies with individuals or staff.
- Document activities related to nursing and medical care in a timely manner and consistent with established formats.
- Safeguard Individual Rights.
- Assist in developing and updating the program plans of individuals when requested.
- Be knowledgeable about and participate in the provision of Active Treatment programs for individuals.
- Assist with maintaining a safe and sanitary environment in compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Participate in staff meetings and staff development programs as directed.
- Communicate with families and staff.
- ·Accompany individuals on appointments or field trips when requested.
- Direct/supervise the delivery of nursing care in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
- Be prepared to precept new nurses, if asked.
- Direct and assist the activities of the Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the absence of the Program Manager.
- Report insubordinate DSP behavior or any other flagrant disregard of DSP job assignments, duties or care procedures for individuals to the Program Manager.
- Follow Event reporting procedures for instances of neglect and abuse.
- Attends all in-services posted as mandatory and completes additional fifteen hours of related training every year.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- A registered nurse licensed in Virginia required, bachelor’s in nursing preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years’ supervisory experience in a residential or clinic setting
- At least 3 years of experience working directly with individuals having severe developmental and physical disabilities.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and squat for variable periods of time, adhere to the Home’s dress code policy, and always wear a company-issued ID badge.
- Ability to lift 35 pounds independently and with or without assistive equipment
