Job Title: Forklift Operator / General Laborer

Job Description

This role combines skilled forklift operation with hands-on general labor in an outdoor yard environment. You will safely move, load, unload, and organize stone and brick materials, support inventory management, and provide helpful service to customers picking up materials. The position requires a safety-focused, trainable individual who works well with a team and takes direction from more tenured colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Operate sit-down forklifts to load, unload, move, locate, relocate, stack, and count stone and brick materials within the yard.
  • Ensure proper stacking, placement, and storage of materials to prevent damage and maintain a safe, organized yard.
  • Load materials into customers’ cars, trucks, box trucks, and flatbeds in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assist with inventory management, including counting, recording, and tracking materials.
  • Perform general yard maintenance, including cleaning, organizing work areas, and keeping pathways clear.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures while operating forklifts and handling materials.
  • Conduct routine checks on forklifts and promptly report any issues or maintenance needs.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete daily tasks efficiently and support overall yard operations.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service when interacting with clients and vendors.
  • Handle general labor tasks as needed, including loading and unloading materials by hand when required.
  • Ensure materials are stored securely to minimize risk of accidents or product loss.

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to safely operate a sit-down forklift in a yard or warehouse environment.
  • Strong material handling skills, including loading, unloading, stacking, and organizing heavy materials.
  • Ability to perform general labor tasks in an outdoor setting.
  • Attention to detail when placing and storing materials to ensure safety and prevent damage.
  • Basic inventory skills, including counting and recording materials accurately.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standard operating procedures consistently.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with other yard staff.
  • Customer service skills to assist customers and vendors in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Willingness to be trained and to take direction from more experienced team members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with stone, brick, or other heavy building materials.
  • Comfort working in an outdoor, physically active role throughout the day.

Work Environment

This position is based in an outdoor yard environment, working closely with a small team of other yard professionals. You will operate sit-down forklifts and handle stone, brick, and related materials in all typical outdoor conditions. The role is physically active, requiring regular lifting, loading, and moving of materials. You will be expected to follow all safety guidelines and wear appropriate work attire suitable for outdoor, hands-on labor and equipment operation, such as sturdy footwear and practical clothing. The environment emphasizes teamwork, trainability, and respect for guidance from more tenured team members.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Chesapeake, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr.
