Director, Nation Firearms Museums
1. Supervise NRA Museums exhibit themes, selection, design and implementation on an on-going basis being responsive to changing priorities and opportunities.
2. Active participation, as appropriate, in planning for existing and possible future NRA Museums.
3. Coordinate the operation of NRA Museums, to include, but not be limited to the following:
- NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, VA, provides supervision of Museums staff in conducting overall operations.
- NRA National Sporting Arms Museum at Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, MO, provides remote oversight of operations and provides direction, guidance and consultation to the appropriate Bass Pro staff in the operation of the Museum.
- Frank Brownell Museum of the Southwest located at NRA Whittington Center in Raton, MN, by providing guidance and consultation to the appropriate Whittington Center staff in the operation and exhibits of the museum.
4. Responsible for the coordination and supervision of Museums staff in the development, planning and presentation of additional temporary and long-term firearms exhibits and educational efforts to include, but not be limited to:
- NRA Museum exhibits on the road at various venues where the museum is promoting the NRA and/or the NRA Museums.
- Long-term firearms exhibits at other museums and appropriate venues.
- Firearms exhibits, technical support, and/or loans of firearms to other museums and appropriate venues.
- Short-term exhibits at public events.
- Educational lectures, programs, and special events.
5. Supervise Museums staff in the conservation, record-keeping, protection and development of the NRA Firearms Collection, to include coordination with The Office of the Secretary relative to NRA FFL records system.
6. Promotion of NRA Museums and public education on firearms and their history through print, electronic and broadcast media. This includes planning, coordination, direct participation and supervision of appropriate Museum staff in the following.
- Development, writing, and publication of appropriate books and articles.
- Development of and response to appropriate media requests for Museums and historical firearms information and content, in close cooperation and coordination with the Marketing/Media Relations Division.
- Television and radio programming, including dedicated series when possible, regular participation in ongoing program series and participation in individual programs.
- Website and social media.
- Firearms research.
- Supervision of the development and operation of the NRA Museums library.
- Continued development of photographic and video content, including expansion of the Museums' firearms photo records and educational video collection.
7. Supervise Museums' staff in the implementation of gun collector programs.
8. Supervise Museums' staff in timely and responsive compliance with NRA administrative requirements for the Division's operations.
9. Develop, implement and monitor Divisional budget on an annual basis.
10. Supervise utilization of Museum Division's resources to appropriately support, promote and coordinate with other NRA Divisions, services and programs.
11. Motivate and mentor Museums staff through timely performance evaluations and evaluate their performance as it relates to each staff person's goals and objectives. Provide constructive feedback as it relates to assigned tasks.
12. Perform the duties of Secretary for the Gun Collectors Committee of the NRA Board of Directors. Can make recommendation, through the appropriate process, to appoint another NRA Museum staff person to the position of Committee Secretary.
13. Perform other tasks as assigned.SCOPE: High visibility with Museums' staff, other NRA Divisions, NRA Board of Directors and Committee members, general public, NRA members, other museum and educational institutions and Bass Pro Headquarters staff. Position functions in a fast-paced work environment with minimal direct supervision. Frequent local and national travel required. Frequent after hours and weekend work required.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Undergraduate degree in applicable field required, applicable post-graduate degree preferred. Multiple years of experience in museums management or antique firearms required. Proven successful management and administrative experience required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of firearms and firearms history required. Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking, media interaction, leadership and writing, required. Strong administrative and effective written/verbal communications skills, required. Proven management skills together with the ability to prioritize work and oversee projects, required. The ability to develop and implement programs from inception, essential. Attention to detail is critical, as well as being self-motivated, essential. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office software and social media required. Demonstrated ability to formulate, implement and monitor annual budget required. Proven ability to supervise and motivate staff is critical. Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff, essential.
