Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A school district in Newport News, VA is seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to support K-12 students during the 2025-2026 school year. This contract position offers a 37.5-hour workweek with a typical day lasting 7.5 hours, starting on August 11, 2025, and running through June 1, 2026. The exact campus and grade levels will be determined, with an emphasis on students in transition, including older high school students.

Responsibilities:

• Provide interpretation services in both one-on-one settings and classroom environments
• Support effective communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing students and their peers and instructors
• Perform light paraeducator duties as needed to assist students learning experiences
• Collaborate with educators and staff to facilitate accessible educational opportunities

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training in sign language and extensive experience interpreting
• Must possess or be eligible to obtain Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification or its equivalent as validated by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing at the time of hire
• Candidates with VQAS Level II certification will be allowed two years from hire to achieve Level III certification, following VDOE guidelines
