Job Description

The Mechanical Technician will lead a variety of composite fabrication processes, including filament winding, hand layup, resin transfer molding, and basic machining. This role requires excellent situational awareness skills and the ability to work with complex machinery. The technician will handle and mix various chemicals, assemble complex precision assemblies, and prepare and document processes while working in a dynamic team environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team in various composite fabrication processes.
• Work in a dynamic team environment, multitasking and learning required processes utilizing various machine types.
• Safely handle and mix chemicals such as acetone, solvents, epoxy, and alcohols.
• Operate in proximity to powerful magnets and magnetic fields.
• Read, interpret, and work from drawings with minimal supervision.
• Set up and operate machines such as manual mills, lathes, bandsaws, curing ovens, welders, and more.
• Maintain tolerance requirements of drawings through proper fixturing.
• Operate manual equipment including lathes and mills.
• Produce and maintain part characteristics according to specifications and inspect tools for wear.
• Fit and assemble precision parts and inspect product samples for quality.
• Perform minor preventative maintenance and report safety issues or defective material.
• Support investigations of complex products and assist other engineering disciplines.
• Adhere to safety standards and maintain situational awareness.
• Perform work within quality standards and deadlines.

Essential Skills

• Mechanical and composite manufacturing expertise.
• Experience with fabrication, measuring tools, and machine operation.
• Proficiency in operating mills and lathes.
• Ability to handle and mix chemicals safely.
• Strong situational awareness and ability to work with complex machinery.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Completion of an apprentice program in welding or machining or 2-4 years of relevant work experience.
• Ability to run complex machinery and perform setup for fabrication operations.
• Leadership skills in precision assembly of components.
• Knowledge of measurement science, mathematics, physics, and computer numerical control theory.
• High mathematical aptitude and superior computer skills.

Work Environment

The role involves standing for long periods in a machine shop or manufacturing environment, utilizing various equipment and machinery. The work environment prioritizes safety and situational awareness.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
