Job Title: Data Center Technician
Location: Ashburn, Virginia
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8-5 EST
Pay Rate: $20.00-$25.00 per hour
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience working in a Data Center environment
- Baseline IT knowledge of computer hardware and components is required (break/fix experience preferred)
- Experience with hardware troubleshooting skills (e.g., replacing motherboards, diagnosing boot issues)
- Comfortable with physical labor (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, bending)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
Role Overview:
We’re seeking 10 Data Center Technicians (DCT Level 1)for a large-scale decommissioning project across Northern Virginia (NOVA) . Primary location is Ashburn , but candidates must be open to working at other NOVA sites. This is a 75% decommissioning / 25% technical support role—perfect for candidates looking to get their foot in the door with Microsoft and gain valuable data center experience.
This will start off as a hands-on, physical role focused on decommissioning servers and hardware. Technicians will:
- Unrack servers and remove hard drives
- Unscrew and drill to release drives from brackets
- Re-rack blades/servers
- Perform physical audits of data center assets
- Remove network cables and label/stage power & networking cables
- Follow detailed procedures under guidance from DCT Leads
- Monitor systems for equipment failures or performance issues
- Respond to error messages and assist in debugging
- Operate software tools to manipulate data and generate reports
- PPE Requirements: ANSI/CE/EN-approved hard hat or bump cap; Level 5 cut/abrasion/impact -resistant gloves; Composite/steel-reinforced boots
Then, it will move into the logical and operational side of the data center where the job will be more about problem-solving, systems knowledge , and using tools like SSH, BIOS access, or vendor-specific diagnostic software.
- Diagnosing hardware/software issues on servers, storage arrays, or network devices.
- Responding to system alerts or failures , investigating logs, running tests.
- Replacing faulty components (like RAM, drives, or PSUs) and verifying systems come back online properly.
- Working with remote teams or ticketing systems to escalate or document issues.
