What will you be doing!

  • Contributing to the application and qualification of (system and/or sub‑channel) thermalhydraulics codes or coupled codes for CANDU and small modular reactors (SMRs).
  • Contributing to reactor safety research as part of a multi‑disciplinary team in areas such as thermalhydraulics (both experimental and modelling & simulation), reactor physics, and severe accidents.
  • Managing Federal Science & Technology (FST), Laboratory‑Directed Science & Technology (LDST) and CANDU Owners Group (COG) projects or tasks on an as‑required basis, ensuring deliverables and milestones are achieved on time and on budget.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • An advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Engineering (e.g., Nuclear / Mechanical / Chemical / Industrial or similar) or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience
    • Background in numerical methods, single‑ and two‑phase fluid flow and heat transfer.
    • Experience in conducting thermalhydraulic experiments, and/or in the development and application of system thermalhydraulics and/or sub‑channel thermalhydraulics and/or CFD codes (e.g., ARIANT, CATHENA, RELAP5‑3D, TRACE, ASSERT, COBRA‑TF, STAR‑CCM+) to model CANDU and/or advanced reactors including small modular reactors (SMR).
    • Experience in the use of workstations, high‑performance computing clusters, associated operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.) and software applications (e.g., MS‑Office).
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of code development, code validation and software quality assurance is desirable.
    • Knowledge of reactor safety & defense‑in‑depth, and sensitivity and uncertainty analysis methodology is desirable.
    • General knowledge of CANDU reactors and/or advanced reactors (e.g. High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors, Molten Salt Reactors, Boiling Water Reactors, Heat Pipes, and Fusion Reactors) would be an asset.
    • A proven track record in the publication of technical papers and reports.
    • Excellent technical writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively present work to expert and non‑expert audiences.
    • Motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom . Location :

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires regular work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also permitting the employee to spend the majority of their time working remotely, should they so desire. CNL employees who choose to work remotely the majority of the time are provided with the equipment required to be successful at their remote workplace (laptop, chair, monitor, etc.); however, they are not provided a dedicated onsite office. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley. It affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
