Litigation Paralegal
We are seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to support the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Virginia (USAO WDVA). Your role will involve preparing and processing a variety of legal documents, assisting attorneys in trial preparation, managing case-related databases, and coordinating with victim/witness specialists to ensure compliance with departmental guidelines. You will also handle legal correspondence, perform legal research, and provide technical support for courtroom presentations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Document Preparation & Review:
- Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents (e.g. complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas)
- Review materials and determine the need for assembly
- Obtain needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources
- Submit completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or directly to the court
- Prepare legal actions (e.g. indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgments, applications, notices, affidavits, summonses, grand jury subpoenas, rules to show cause, proofs of claim, and satisfaction of judgment)
- Help attorneys in trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, jury instructions, witness and exhibit lists
- Coordinate with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines
- Notify appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues
- Verify citations and statutory references contained in legal documents using original and online legal resources
- Ensure citations are complete and consistent with the source material
- Develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, listing cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous references
- Compose original letters requiring a knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology
- Draft transmittal of pleadings
- Prepare requests for extensions of time
- Advise of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies
- Send notices to attorneys representing defendants
- Scan/input and link case-related materials into an electronic database and manage that database
- Manage discovery and trial preparation
- Assemble physical files for new cases by filing materials in chronological order
- Prepare and print conflict of interest sheets for assigned attorneys and number the initial discovery
- Prepare files for closing by organizing documents in chronological order
- Ensure that the judgment and charging document are in the file
- Prepare a closing sheet for the assigned attorney's signature
- Assist support staff members by pulling files for court, checking court calendar, and ensuring files are accounted for
- Perform docketing duties using the automated case tracking system (e.g. opening, updating, and closing cases)
- Search the database for required information as necessary
- Answer telephone calls, refer callers to staff members, or take messages
- Furnish requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and office procedures
- Determine which matters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matter
- Prepare travel arrangements (i.e., itineraries, transportation, hotel reservations, travel authorizations, and vouchers etc.)
- Document Production and Quality Control
- Produce a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications
- Integrate output from different software types into word processing or desktop publishing text
- Ensure all documents contain the proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar
- Provide automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations
- Use various software applications and graphics hardware
- Prepare documents, charts, and visual materials used in trials
- Provide technical support (e.g. enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits)
- 2 years of paralegal experience required
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)
- Knowledge of legal procedures and terminology
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or an equivalent field required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Paralegal certificate preferred
