Carpenter Journeyperson – Marine Shipyard
Location: Hampton Roads, Virginia Schedule: Full-time, hourly Pay: $26.31/hour Classification: Journeyperson Carpenter (Marine)
Overview Join a premier shipyard team performing high-quality marine carpentry, joiner work, and dry dock blocking. You’ll construct, install, repair, and fabricate primarily wood structures to protect ship equipment, outfit dry docks with docking blocks, and outfit vessels per specifications and drawings. Work is hands-on, team-oriented, and safety-focused with steady, challenging projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and work from drawings, job specs, manuals, change orders, and contract specs.
- Lay out, cut, and fabricate products from blueprints, owner specifications, and sketches.
- Perform marine carpentry, joiner tasks, and dry dock blocking operations.
- Safely operate and maintain shop equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools.
- Work accurately with U.S. standard and metric measurements; add, subtract, multiply, divide.
- Deliver quality work and provide Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required.
- Complete daily assignments, documentation, and quality sign-offs.
- Follow written, oral, and diagrammed instructions; address unexpected issues professionally.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area and adhere to OSHA and company safety practices.
Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED or vocational school degree.
- 6+ years of related carpentry experience (marine/shipyard strongly preferred).
- Strong blueprint/spec interpretation and shop math skills.
- Thorough knowledge of marine carpentry, joiner, and dry dock blocking processes.
- Proficient with carpentry shop machinery, portable power tools, and hand tools.
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to write concise Condition Found Reports (CFR).
- Able to recognize and communicate hazardous conditions.
Work Environment
- Work in varied settings: ship interiors, dry docks, piers, scaffolding, ladders, and lifts.
- Conditions may include confined spaces, heights, exposure to weather, heat/cold, humidity, low light, dust/smoke, and loud noise.
- Appropriate PPE is mandatory (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, goggles, respirator, harness, flotation, as applicable).
Physical Requirements
- Regularly: stand, walk, reach, climb/balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; occasional sitting.
- Lift/push/pull: 50–100 lbs occasionally; up to 20 lbs frequently.
- Prolonged standing (2–3 hours); bend, squat, crawl, kneel as needed.
- Climb safely (stairs, scaffolding, ladders, ramps); work at heights 12’+.
- Work at various levels (waist, eye, overhead) with full arm extension.
- Maintain good balance on uneven surfaces; maneuver obstacles.
- Sufficient grip/coordination to operate tools/equipment.
- Access 18" x 36" openings; work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Respond to visual, verbal, and audible commands; turn head/body as required.
- Perceive size/shape/temperature/texture via hands/fingers.
