Psychiatrist - Substance Abuse

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2025, or until all positions are filled. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications is May 15, 2025, with subsequent cut-offs every two weeks. Applications received after this date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur until the positions are filled. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing a full range of therapeutic interventions in units/programs within the Hampton VA Healthcare System, including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation, and management. Recognizing the need for appropriate care levels and referring patients for inpatient care when necessary.
  • Providing support and clinical oversight to assigned programs.
  • Collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams, participating in team meetings and treatment planning to enhance patient care coordination.
  • Performing evaluations and management of patients, including ordering diagnostic tests and consultations, and making appropriate treatment decisions based on findings.
  • Supervising and teaching house staff and trainees in the clinical area as appropriate.

  • Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week.

Conditions of employment:

  • U.S. Citizenship required; non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible.
  • Pre-employment drug screening, background checks, and security investigations required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in English required.
  • Participation in onboarding and pre-employment requirements, including acceptable ID verification.
  • Pre-employment physical examination required.
  • Participation in the influenza vaccination program required.

Qualifications:

Applicants must meet basic and any additional specified requirements, including licensure and training. Pending training completion or license acquisition may allow for tentative referral but not final hiring.

Basic Requirements:

  • US Citizenship
  • Degree of MD or equivalent from an approved school
  • Current, full, unrestricted medical license
  • Completed residency training in an approved program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Proficiency in English

Preferred Experience:

  • Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Psychiatry
  • 1-2 years of experience in substance abuse treatment

Physical requirements include the ability to perform activities such as standing, walking, and lifting, with no restrictions.
