Postdoctoral Scientist - Robotics
About the role:
The Janelia Experimental Technology (jET) group, in collaboration with the Reiser Lab (HHMI Janelia) and the Schnitzer Lab (Stanford University; HHMI) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in robotics, mechatronics, systems engineering, machine vision, AI/ML systems, or autonomous control to join our collaborative neuroengineering efforts. This person will build AI-driven robotic systems for high-throughput brain imaging and behavioral phenotyping in Drosophila , the fruit fly that powers modern neuroscience discoveries.
This project builds on the Schnitzer lab’s advances in robotic experimentation, laser microsurgery, and optical voltage imaging, and the Reiser labs’ expertise in instrumentation, fly behavior, neural circuit analysis, and connectomics. This position is part of AI@HHMI, a ten-year initiative to integrate artificial intelligence throughout the scientific process.
During the initial phase of the project, the researcher will spend significant time on-site at Stanford University working with the Schnitzer Lab to learn and document the existing FlyMAX system. This may involve an extended stay at Stanford during the initial ramp-up period. Afterward, the position will be based primarily at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA, with periodic travel for continued collaboration.
The successful candidate will bring a deep interest in applying engineering and computational approaches to problems in biology and neuroscience. Working closely with members of the MCN-NET (Neuroengineering Team) and JET’s mechanical engineers and fabrication specialists, they will lead efforts to replicate, streamline, adapt, and advance the FlyMAX system, ensuring tight integration across hardware, software, and experimental workflows to support neuroscience research.
What we provide:
A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
Access to advanced facilities in instrument design and fabrication, imaging, and computation.
The opportunity to engage with world-class researchers, software engineers and AI/ML experts, contribute to impactful science, and be part of a dynamic community committed to advancing humanity’s understanding of fundamental scientific questions.
Amenities that enhance work-life balance such as on-site childcare, free gyms, available on-campus housing, social and dining spaces, and convenient shuttle bus service to Janelia from the Washington D.C. metro area.
What you’ll do:
Lead the replication, integration, and extension of the FlyMAX system across robotics, software, and neuroscience domains.
Integrate hardware and software components—robotics, control systems, imaging, and data pipelines—into reliable, high-performance research tools.
Collaborate with neuroengineers, biologists, and mechanical engineers to translate technical innovations into research impact.
Document and share new designs, workflows, and analytical tools with the broader scientific community.
What you bring:
PhD in robotics, electrical or mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
A flexible and adaptive approach, willing to learn new technologies and techniques, and share knowledge.
Proven experience integrating complex hardware and software systems—this capability is essential for success in the role.
Strong software development skills applied to control systems, automation, or data acquisition.
Familiarity with mechanical design and fabrication, coupled with a readiness to collaborate closely with engineers and neuroscientists.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical and biological research contexts.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this position with reasonable accommodation. Requests for reasonable accommodation will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Please Note:
This job description sets forth the job’s principal duties, responsibilities, and requirements; it should not be construed as an exhaustive statement, however. Unless they begin with the word “may,” the Essential Duties and Responsibilities described above are “essential functions” of the job, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Compensation:
A Postdoc 00 (0 to 1 year research experience after obtaining a PhD) is compensated at a rate of $74,200.00 annually at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus.
Pay Type:
Annual
HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers.
