SVM- Assistant Professor, Large Animal Medicine & Surgery

St. George's University invites applicants for a full-time teaching position in the Large Animal and Surgery Department in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/12/2026.

Objective
The faculty of St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions

Instructional Activities

  • Provide didactic, clinical and laboratoryinstruction to veterinary students, with emphasis on teaching core clinical skills, including physical examination techniques and thedevelopment of clinical competence in large animal medicine.
  • Participate in field-based veterinary services while training studentsin basic clinical procedures, clinical reasoning, and professional practice, and strengthen partnerships with local farmers throughambulatory services, outreach, and community engagement.
  • Participate in daily clinical care and teaching activities at LARFinvolving bovine, equine, and caprine teaching herds.
  • Provide direct and indirect clinical supervision of students and technicalstaff across clinical skills labs, ambulatory services, and related activities.
  • Participate in curriculum development andcontinuous improvement of teaching activities, including designing lesson content, delivering lectures, facilitating case-based learning,and grading OSCE and other assessments. Serve as a faculty mentor to veterinary students. Participate in ongoing professional andcommunication skills development to support effective teaching and clinical practice.

Supplemental teaching

Inaddition to teaching in the core courses for the DVM program, faculty may be required to support departmental teaching in the graduateprogram and the pre-veterinary program as well as the Integrated Team Instruction delivery of the DVM program - a small group-basedcurriculum delivery.

Research and Scholarly Activities

  • Actively engage in a research topic in a relevant area
  • Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students
  • Contribute to curriculumreview and innovation.
  • Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department
  • Active participation in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Veterinary Education

Service

  • Participate in the following University activities as required:
    • Departmental reviews
    • Faculty meetings
    • Special committee assignments
    • Administrative roles, as assigned by the Chair of the Department and/or theDean
    • Contribute to the academic advisory system for all students enrolled on the DVM program.
  • Outreach efforts inthe local community

Qualifications

  • DVM degree or equivalent
  • MSc degree

Desirable Qualities

  • At least 5 years of experience as an equine practitioner is strongly preferred.
  • A recognized teaching certificate or formal teaching qualification is highly desirable.
  • Experience instructing andlecturing equine internal medicine and surgery and clinical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the abilityto work effectively in a collaborative team environment while demonstrating punctuality, reliability, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated commitment to veterinary student-centered learning, clinical excellence, and service within an academic veterinarysetting.
  • Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by an AVMA specialty college or board.
  • Experience with foodanimals and flexibility in duties are considered an asset.
