Job Description


The Software Test Engineer supports HII's Integrated Training Systems - Software Development (ITS-SD) team in Virginia Beach, VA. In this role, you will contribute to the development, testing, and deployment of the Advanced Training Domain (ATD) - a shipboard combat system trainer used across Navy training programs. You will perform hands-on software testing, integrate hardware and software components, and validate system performance in both lab and shipboard environments.

Your work directly supports Fleet training readiness by ensuring that ITS-SD software products are stable, reliable, and functionally aligned with system requirements. Through rigorous testing and system integration, you help deliver mission-critical training technology that Sailors depend on for mission preparation and operational proficiency.



Essential Job Responsibilities

• Conduct software testing and system verification in ITS-SD laboratory environments and, when required, aboard Navy ships.
• Integrate software builds, network operating systems, and hardware components to support system functionality.
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), including requirement review, integration, testing, defect analysis, and maintenance.
• Develop, execute, and maintain test plans, test procedures, and system validation documentation.
• Identify defects, document results, and collaborate with developers and systems engineers to resolve issues.
• Assist with installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and integration activities during lab and shipboard events.
• Use tools such as JIRA Software for defect tracking and Subversion (SVN) for version control.
• Support limited travel for shipboard installation, testing, or troubleshooting as required.

Minimum Qualifications



Education & Experience

• 2 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in a related field; OR
• 0 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree in a related field; OR
• 6 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma/equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience in systems/software engineering, development, integration, and/or testing.
• Working knowledge of Linux and Unix operating systems.
• Experience with C++ software or familiarity with system-level programming concepts.
• Ability to develop a task plan and execute assigned testing tasks independently.
• Understanding of integration, troubleshooting, and validation best practices.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to work in a collaborative engineering environment.

Credentials

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance.
• Must have a current CompTIA Security+ certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.

Preferred Requirements

• Active DoD clearance.
• Operational or developmental experience with Navy training systems or simulation systems.
• Experience using JIRA Software for issue tracking.
• Experience using Subversion (SVN) for configuration management or version control.
• Familiarity with shipboard systems, combat systems, or Navy environments.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in office, industrial, laboratory, and shipboard environments.
• Ability to climb ladders, access confined spaces, and tolerate varying temperatures during shipboard or industrial testing.
• Ability to carry testing equipment or materials as needed.
