Make a meaningful difference in students’ lives by joining a dynamic school environment as a dedicated Sign Language Interpreter. In this contract role, you’ll play a crucial part in ensuring that students who are deaf or hard of hearing can fully participate in all aspects of the educational experience. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with educators and support teams, enhancing communication and access to curriculum for students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide precise and effective sign language interpretation for students during classroom instruction, school activities, field trips, and assemblies.
- Facilitate seamless communication among students, teachers, staff, administration, and peers.
- Adapt interpreting style to fit individual student needs and developmental levels.
- Support full access to the general education curriculum and broader school environment.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, special education, and related service providers to support educational goals.
- Take part in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and other gatherings, ensuring all students’ communication needs are met.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to school policies and professional standards.
- Offer insights to the educational team about communication needs and potential barriers affecting student participation.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and sign language interpretation.
- Valid VQAS Level III certification, or equivalent as recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or EIPA Written with at least a 3.5 Performance Test score.
- Background in K-12 educational interpreting preferred.
- Understanding of the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and team collaboration skills.
- High school diploma (minimum); further education or interpreter training preferred.
- Previous experience working with IEPs or special education processes is advantageous.
