Mission, History & Programs of the Department

Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a long history of training medical students and resident physicians. Our department oversees various family medicine education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs:

1. The Inner City International Rural Program (I2CRP): A 4-year program for medical students committed to serving underserved populations. The mission is to increase the number of students pursuing careers in primary care and practicing in underserved settings. It enrolls up to 24 students per cohort, approximately 96 students during M1 - M4 years. The curriculum includes didactics, journal clubs, grand rounds, service roles in underserved settings, preceptorships, clerkship rotations in various settings, and a scholarly capstone project.
2. Family Medicine Scholars Training and Admission Track (fmSTAT): A four-year program designed to support students interested in family medicine through community experiences, mentorship, seminars, research opportunities, and professional development activities.

Additionally, we have four affiliated family medicine residency programs across Virginia.

Chief Purpose of the Position

This position is based at VCU's Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain a practice/panel at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic
• Perform duties necessary for the operation of VCU Health Systems and maintain clinical competency in Family Medicine
• Serve on medical staff committees
• Participate in activities demonstrating professional commitment to the position and VCU Health Systems

Required Qualifications

• Ability to obtain a medical license in Virginia
• Completion of an accredited Family Medicine residency
• Certification by the American Board of Family Medicine, with recertification if applicable
• Experience providing direct patient care to underserved populations
• Willingness to care for patients in inpatient and outpatient settings
• Experience working in diverse environments or a commitment to fostering diversity at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in rural patient care or residency training in rural settings
• Experience in medical education of learners
• Willingness to lead in areas such as care of pregnant women, inpatient adult and pediatric care, mental health, substance abuse treatment, Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), or specialized procedural training
• Recent scholarly activity such as research, publications, or participation in professional organizations
