General Summary

Performs vehicle maintenance, repair, and fueling services for Southern States Cooperative, Inc. Service Center customers. Strictly adheres to government regulations and SSC operating procedures. Performs work under general supervision. 

Essential Job Functions -- complexity of essential job functions increases with grade level

  • Effectively perform a variety of vehicle maintenance and repair work, including:
    • Repair tire punctures and related damage. Install replacement tires, including rotate, mount, and balance. Check and adjust tire pressure.
    • Test, charge, and replace vehicle batteries. Clean and replace battery terminals.
    • Check vehicle fluid levels, recommend and add fluids as needed.
    • General vehicle maintenance which may include replacing lights, windshield wiper blades, and other vehicle accessories.
    • Small engine repair for Stihl items.
  • Gather and analyze information to diagnose problems and perform repair. Read and effectively interpret specifications, diagrams, meters, gauges, and control panels. Operate and maintain tire and battery service equipment, tire service truck (depending upon location), and all related tools in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Safely operate the fuel pump terminals to dispense gasoline and diesel fuel into customer vehicles and approved canisters. Consistently comply with regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Represent SSC in a positive manner by providing courteous, reliable, and prompt service to customers. Clearly write and communicate repair recommendations, technical details, parts, and service time to customers. Strive to grow and maintain customer base through superior service.
  • Process customer payments utilizing cash register, hand-held scanner, and credit/debit card terminal. Accurately handle cash and make change. Follow facility checkout guidelines to ensure accurate and safe service. Process invoices for customer billing.
  • Clean fuel pump terminals and adjacent areas to Keep tools, equipment and supplies in proper places. Minimize waste and properly dispose of waste material. Comply with facility Housekeeping Plan and SSC procedures.
  • Assist with inventory control by accurately counting and recording physical inventory of parts and supplies. Perform daily inventory control on pump island terminals. Order tires, batteries, and other supplies to maintain proper inventory levels and account for seasonal demand.
  • Maintain written and/or computerized reports, logs, vehicle/equipment maintenance records and other related documents accurately, neatly, and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in specialized training, certification courses, and/or meetings as requested. Learn and develop automotive mechanic skills and techniques to enhance job performance. Stay current on safety and operational standards.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area to ensure safety and to provide a welcoming environment for customers. Keep tools, equipment and supplies in proper places. Minimize waste and properly dispose of waste material. Perform related cleaning of facility, fuel pump terminals, equipment, and work areas according to Housekeeping Plan and SSC procedures.
  • Perform work safely as to not cause harm to yourself, customers and property, co-workers, equipment, or inventory. Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required. Operate all equipment and vehicles according to SSC policy and government regulations. Comply with OSHA regulations, Southern States Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, work rules and policies.
  • Perform all other job functions as assigned.

Education: Requires a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) 

Experience:

Requires up to six (6) months of automotive repair experience and the ability to learn and develop automotive repair skills. Prefer customer service experience. Previous Southern States work experience a plus.
Licensing: Requires a valid driver's license and compliance with SSC motor vehicle policy

  • Able to learn and develop automotive maintenance and repair skills for tire, battery, related vehicle systems and accessories and successful completion of required training
  • Able to operate a service vehicle or tow-truck (depending upon location)
  • Able to learn and follow safety and equipment operating procedures at all times
  • Able to read and interpret manuals, specifications, diagrams, meters, gauges, and control panels
  • Able to gather and analyze data to troubleshoot and diagnose repair needs utilizing test instruments and specialized tools
  • Able to effectively utilize interpersonal skills to communicate customer sales, service, and repair recommendations
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate percentages in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Able to perform sales payment transactions and handle cash with accuracy
  • Able to complete paperwork, reports, documentation, and email communication in a legible, organized, and timely manner
  • Able to speak, read, write the English language in a proficient manner
  • Able to work in a fast paced team environment
  • Able to work extended hours to meet business demands
  • Able to work on small engine repair
  • Stihl repair a plus
Work Environment
Performs essential job functions outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions, and in an automotive service center subject to seasonal temperatures and humidity.
Frequently exposed to hazards including:
  • Automotive fluids and lubricants, gasoline, diesel fuel, battery acid/residue, related odors and fumes
  • Moving mechanical parts, tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Dust, wet surfaces, vibrations, and electric current
  • Noise levels where hearing protection is optional per PPE Plan
Schedule requirements vary based on location. Extended hours and/or alternate work schedules are required. Ability to report to work on time and in adverse weather conditions is required.
Physical Activities & Requirements
This role requires continuous physical activity to perform essential job functions for the duration of the shift.
  • Continuously bend, crouch, stoop; manual dexterity (fingers and hands) for controls, tools and equipment; reach with arms and hands for extended periods while conducting repairs and operating fuel terminals; stand and walk for extended periods on hard or uneven surfaces; utilize hands in repetitive motion; utilize eye/hand/foot coordination; twist back and neck. Pull, push, lift, carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, including bulky items such as vehicle tires and batteries.
  • Frequently balance, kneel, stack, sweep. Pull, push, lift, carry 50-80 pounds.
  • Occasionally pull, push, lift, carry 80-100 pounds, may be assisted. Depending upon location, may drive service vehicles that require climbing steps and repetitive foot motion.

Must be able to hear vehicle and equipment sounds, co-workers and radio. Must be able to speak to co-workers and customers regarding daily operations and safety. Must be able to detect odors and fumes. Specific vision abilities required by this position include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Tools & Equipment
Motor vehicles, specialized automotive tools and equipment for battery and tire servicing and general maintenance. Gasoline and diesel fuel pump terminals. Steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, handcart, manuals, forms, spreadsheets, telephone, writing instrument. Personal protective equipment as required by any and all product warning labels.
