Job Description
The Pipe Layer installs and assembles large-diameter underground piping systems for water, sewer, and storm drain projects. This role works closely with equipment operators to place pipe accurately, uses lasers and transits to ensure proper alignment and grade, and performs backfilling and finishing work to meet project specifications and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Start engines and operate machine controls, including throttles, switches, levers, and pedals, to support pipe installation activities.
- Locate underground utilities and services, such as existing pipes and wires, before beginning excavation or installation work.
- Assist equipment operators in the safe and accurate placement of pipe in trenches and other underground locations.
- Direct equipment operators using clear and precise hand signals to ensure correct pipe positioning and safe machine operation.
- Backfill around installed pipe using appropriate hand tools, ensuring proper compaction and protection of the piping system.
- Set up and work with pipe lasers and transits to establish line and grade, maintaining accurate alignment of the pipe run.
- Locate and mark the correct position of pipe and fittings within underground trenches according to blueprints and specifications.
- Assemble and install valves, fittings, and pipe made of metal, PVC, ductile iron, and concrete, ensuring secure and leak-free connections.
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to determine work procedures, pipe layout, and installation requirements.
- Perform duties as a bank man or tailman to guide pipe placement and maintain safe operations around heavy equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, follow all safety procedures, and use tools and equipment in accordance with company standards.
- Work on feet for extended periods, performing physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, bending, and working in trenches as required.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of experience installing large diameter pipes for water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
- Demonstrated experience in pipe laying, including positioning, joining, and securing underground piping.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications to determine work procedures and pipe layout.
- Proficiency in using pipe lasers and transits to establish and maintain proper line and grade.
- Experience working as a bank man and tailman in construction and pipelaying operations.
- Basic equipment operation experience in a construction environment, particularly around heavy equipment used for pipelaying.
- Ability to work on feet for an entire day and consistently understand and perform assigned tasks.
- Strong awareness of underground utility locating practices to avoid damage to existing pipes and wires.
- Ability to use hand tools safely and effectively for backfilling and pipe installation tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in construction environments involving heavy equipment and underground utility work.
- Experience with assembling and installing valves, fittings, and pipe made of metal, PVC, ductile iron, and concrete.
- Comfort working in trench conditions and coordinating closely with equipment operators.
- Attention to detail in marking pipe positions and verifying measurements against project specifications.
- Reliability in following safety procedures and maintaining clear communication with crew members.
- Willingness to work extended hours, including weekdays and Saturdays, as project needs require.

Work Environment
This role operates in an outdoor construction environment with active heavy equipment and ongoing excavation work. Team members typically work Monday through Saturday in 10–12 hour shifts, with frequent opportunities for overtime. The work involves standing and walking for most of the day, working in trenches, and handling tools and materials associated with pipelaying and utility installation. Employees should be prepared for varying weather conditions and a physically demanding setting that requires appropriate workwear and safety gear suited to a construction site.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr.
