Medical Director - Pediatrics & Specialty Care

UVA Physicians Group Position Summary The Medical Director – Pediatrics & Specialty Care provides physician leadership and clinical oversight for pediatric primary care and pediatric specialty ambulatory clinics. This role combines direct patient care with administrative and operational leadership to ensure high-quality, family-centered, safe, and efficient clinical operations across pediatric service lines. The Medical Director partners closely with UVA Physicians Group (UPG), UVA Health Children’s, and health system leadership to align pediatric clinical practice with organizational priorities, regulatory standards, and performance expectations. The position is accountable for clinical quality outcomes, provider engagement, regulatory compliance, access, and operational effectiveness within pediatric and specialty ambulatory services. This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership
  • Provide visible, engaged clinical leadership to pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and advanced practice providers (APPs).
  • Ensure consistent standards of pediatric and specialty care aligned with UVA Health clinical protocols and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Maintain an active patient panel consistent with specialty, credentialing, and scope of practice.
  • Promote family-centered, developmentally appropriate care across all clinical settings.
  • Serve as a clinical mentor and resource for providers, supporting onboarding, professional development, and continuing education.
  • Promote best practices in documentation, pediatric workflows, preventive care, immunization compliance, and care coordination.
  • Function as an EMR superuser and champion for pediatric clinical technology optimization.
Administrative & Operational Leadership
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve pediatric access, clinic efficiency, subspecialty coordination, and care team workflows.
  • Support alignment between community-based pediatric practices and academic pediatric specialty services.
  • Participate in operational planning, growth strategy, and implementation of pediatric and specialty service line initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to clinic regulations, pediatric-specific compliance requirements, organizational policies, and medical staff bylaws.
  • Support provider recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention for pediatric and specialty roles.
  • Address provider performance concerns in a fair, constructive, and compliant manner.
  • Serve as a clinical liaison to UPG and UVA Health leadership, contributing to pediatric service line development and strategic planning.
Quality, Safety & Population Health
  • Accountable for monitoring pediatric clinical quality, safety, access, and performance metrics.
  • Lead initiatives to improve pediatric outcomes, immunization rates, preventive screening, chronic disease management, and care coordination.
  • Analyze clinical and operational data to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Advance value-based pediatric care and population health initiatives.
  • Promote care models addressing social determinants of health and equitable access for children and adolescents.
  • Implement evidence-based pediatric performance benchmarks and continuous improvement strategies.
Provider Engagement & Collaboration
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and child-focused care.
  • Promote interdisciplinary teamwork among pediatricians, specialists, nurses, behavioral health providers, pharmacists, social workers, and care coordinators.
  • Represent pediatric clinical perspectives in operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Strengthen communication between frontline providers and health system leadership.
  • Encourage academic collaboration where applicable, including teaching and research engagement across pediatric specialty services.
Required Qualifications Education
  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Pediatrics.
  • Fellowship training in a pediatric subspecialty preferred for specialty oversight roles (as applicable).
Certification & Licensure
  • Board certified or board eligible in Pediatrics or applicable pediatric subspecialty in accordance with medical staff bylaws.
  • Eligible for and able to obtain unrestricted Virginia medical licensure.
  • Eligible for and able to obtain clinical privileges in accordance with UVA Health and UPG requirements.
  • Current, unrestricted DEA registration as applicable.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • BLS certification required; additional certifications (NRP, ACLS) as applicable to clinical scope.
Experience
  • Minimum five years of post-residency (or post-fellowship, if applicable) clinical practice experience.
  • Demonstrated progressive clinical leadership with administrative or operational oversight.
  • Experience in pediatric ambulatory care delivery and clinic operations.
  • Proven ability to use clinical and operational data to drive pediatric quality improvement.
  • Experience working within a large academic health system or integrated healthcare organization preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric ambulatory quality standards and improvement methodologies.
  • Understanding of pediatric regulatory, compliance, and accreditation requirements.
  • Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with leadership and operational demands.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal effectiveness with providers, staff, and families.
  • Data-driven decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and pediatric clinical reporting tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to navigate complex academic health system structures while supporting community-based pediatric clinic operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities Provides clinical oversight and leadership for interdisciplinary pediatric ambulatory care teams, which may include pediatric advanced practice providers, specialty physicians, pharmacists, behavioral health providers, social workers, and nursing care coordinators. Participates in provider performance feedback and professional development in partnership with operational leadership. Physical Requirements Ability to perform clinical and administrative duties in an outpatient pediatric setting, including prolonged standing or sitting, computer use, and documentation. Visual, auditory, and communication abilities sufficient for pediatric patient care and administrative responsibilities. Ability to lift light to moderate objects as required, with reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Primarily outpatient clinic-based across pediatric primary and specialty care locations. Occasional travel between clinic sites and attendance at leadership meetings may be required. Regular interaction with pediatric patients, families, clinical staff, and administrative leadership in a dynamic healthcare environment. Success Profile The successful candidate will:
