Job Summary:
The Permit Specialist plays a key role in supporting the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure by preparing, submitting, and tracking permit applications for wireless sites, fiber builds, and small cell installations. This position ensures compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations and works closely with engineering, construction, legal, and government entities to ensure timely and accurate permit approvals. This is primarily a remote position, allowing the Telecom Permit Specialist to perform most responsibilities from a home office. However, occasional travel may be required to visit municipal offices or jurisdictions to submit, finalize, or follow up on permit applications in person. When visiting job sites or municipal locations, adherence to applicable safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, hard hats, or safety glasses—may be required depending on the environment and local regulations.
What you’ll do:
- Prepare, submit, and track permit applications for wireless towers, small cell nodes, fiber optic lines, and other telecom infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate with city, county, and state agencies to ensure timely review and approval of permits (e.g., ROW, encroachment, building, electrical, zoning).
- Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, real estate, construction) to gather required documentation, drawings, and technical specs for permit packages.
- Maintain a permitting database and track the status of all submitted applications; proactively follow up with agencies as needed.
- Interpret jurisdictional permitting requirements, codes, and processes, ensuring all submissions are compliant.
- Assist in resolving issues related to rejected or delayed permits by working with agency contacts or modifying application packages.
- Attend municipal meetings (e.g., planning boards, zoning hearings) when necessary to represent the company’s interests.
- Support audits and regulatory reporting by maintaining accurate and organized permit documentation.
- Monitor expiration dates and ensure permit renewals, amendments, or closeouts are processed timely.
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Telecommunications, Engineering, Public Administration) preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in permitting, preferably in the telecom, construction, or utility industries.
- Familiarity with permitting processes for small cell, DAS, fiber, and macro sites.
- Understanding of Right-of-Way (ROW), zoning, and land use regulations.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and site plans.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and permitting management systems (e.g., Site tracker, Smartsheet).
- Experience interacting with local government agencies and municipalities.
- Knowledge of FCC regulations and municipal franchise agreements.
- Working knowledge of fiber and wireless network architecture.
- Notary Public certification (if required by jurisdiction).
- Valid driver’s license (if travel to agency offices or sites is required).
