Assistant General Counsel
- Provides legal services to the NRA and its affiliated entities as assigned.
- Drafts and writes briefs and memoranda on legal issues; oversees, manages and/or participates in litigation.
- Utilizes communication and public relations skills by participating in training of employees of the NRA relevant to the duties described above.
- Coordinates and plans matters in areas of responsibility with the General Counsel and reports to the General Counsel on the status and progress of such matters.
- Works with NRA personnel at various levels to provide legal services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.SCOPE: The position requires interaction with employees in the Office of General Counsel, NRA management, personnel of other NRA divisions, NRA related organizations, various national and local affiliates of the NRA, federal and state governmental agencies and courts, the general public, and professional associations. Occasional local and long distance travel may be required.
- The position requires the utmost integrity, along with dedication to the mission of the NRA and its affiliates. A successful candidate must have the ability to deal logically, dispassionately, and professionally with matters of considerable importance to the NRA, and to efficiently handle a large volume of work in a timely manner.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The position requires a graduate degree in law and continuing legal education in order to remain current with developments in the law. The candidate must be barred in at least one state. If the candidate resides in Virginia, they must have the Virginia bar. The candidate should have at least 1 to 4 years' experience in the legal field. Training and/or experience in nonprofit governance is mandatory, as is philosophical harmony with the purposes and objectives of the NRA. A background in firearms related activities is helpful but not required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Strong professional and personal integrity, as shown by a clean criminal and disciplinary record, subject to a background check (required, pre-employment).
- Ability to initiate and execute necessary actions in general legal matters to protect and advance the client's interest, as directed, with minimal supervision and oversight.
- Well developed communication skills; both written and oral. Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Strong organizational, research and analytical skills.
- Licensed to practice law in Virginia
- Litigation experience helpful but not required.
- Business travel required, normally including at least one out-of-state trip annually for board meetings.
