Patient Transporter

The Patient Care Technician is responsible for the maintenance and quality of patient care within Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as a team to continuously improve work quality
  • Confirm patient identification prior to procedure by verbal confirmation on outpatients and identification band on in-patients

Summary of Other Job Duties and Expectations:

  • Must be competent and knowledgeable in regards to the needs and concerns of individuals in various age groups
  • Must demonstrate competence in handling patients from all age groups (pediatrics to geriatrics)
  • Document and alert the Operations Manager of the malfunction of various types of medical equipment used in the performance of job duties
  • Make recommendations to the Operations Manager as to additional transport, IV poles, and oxygen equipment needed to operate the department
  • Make recommendation to nursing staff on how to use proper transport modes for patients
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate code procedures and CPR if necessary
  • Assure proper handling of patient's IV and other medical devices during transport
  • Notify nursing units when leaving and returning with patients and utilizes nursing unit transport logs accurately
  • Assist in the movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and radiographic tables, utilizing safety procedures and correct body mechanics
  • Clean and initiate repairs as necessary on all transport equipment
  • Fill oxygen tanks as needed and check oxygen regulators for proper operations prior to use
  • Utilize proper isolation techniques according to Hospital policy
  • Perform quality assurance testing on x-ray film processors each day and review results with Diagnostic section supervisor
  • Prepare and perform duplication and subtraction of x-ray film studies on emergent and routine bases
  • Utilize Radiology Information System (computer system) to accurately perform all functions assigned
  • Utilize the Hospital Information System (HIS) to research and order radiology and laboratory examinations
  • Utilize department transport log consistently and accurately
  • Assist technologist in the performance of x-ray examinations
  • Sort and organize radiology exams to include CT/MRI studies
  • Take radiology exams to the radiologist for wet readings and call the report to nursing units, physicians, and physicians offices
  • Must be proficient at relaying clinical information quickly and accurately to other medical personnel inside and outside the hospital
  • Assist patients to and from stretchers, wheelchairs, and radiology equipment to include CT/MRI scanner
  • Review patient's chart and verify physician's orders prior to patient transport to the department
  • Attend in-services, hospital-wide orientations, and other meetings as required
  • Communicate equipment malfunctions and low inventory levels to the appropriate supervisor
  • Rotate calls as needed
  • Present self in a positive manner, as reflected by personal attire and etiquette
  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
  • May be crossed trained as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Minimum Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education: N/A

Experience: Previous experience as transporter preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be CPR certified within 6 months of employment.
