Youth Programs Lead

The Youth Programs Lead is responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of youth-focused programs and activities to include Before & After Care Programs, Summer and school break camps and manage the youth counselors. This role serves as a mentor and leader for youth participants, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. The Youth Programs Lead will work closely with staff, volunteers, community partners, and families to promote youth development and positive outcomes. The Youth Programs Lead reports directly to the Youth Programs Director. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Must work a minimum of 80% of the split shifts during the weekEnsure Before & After program, summer camp and school break programs are staffed accuratelyResponsible for handing any issues that arise, and communicating directly with guardiansResponsible for handing any behavioral issues that arise, and communicating directly with guardiansMaintain and updates all records required by the Virginia Department of Education (registration forms, allergies, medications, health history, waiver forms, check lists and all other participant files as needed)Create and follow daily activity schedulesAddress issues and concerns as they ariseMaintain high standards in health and safetyEstablish and maintain contact with guardians regarding daily interactions, including childrens behavior, etc.Establish and maintain contact with guardians regarding all participants injuriesMust be aware of youth participants allergiesCoordinate activities for assigned group(s) to include, but not limited to, arts & crafts, games, sport activities, learning and development assignmentsActively participate in all activitiesSupervise youth participantsEnsure that all participants are provided with snacks and mealsEnsure participants board the proper transportation in order to depart facility in a safe and timely mannerEnsure participants arrive from associated schools in a safe and timely mannerReport all absent children to supervisor immediatelyMaintain proper ratios at all timesAct as a role model for participants, demonstrating proper attitude and behavior at all timesRemains calm and focused in an emergency situationKnowledge of VDSS Standards for licensed day care centersPerform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned by the Youth Programs Director and/or the General Manager Program Lead Qualifications (8VAC20-780-210) A. Program leaders shall be at least 18 years of age, have fulfilled a high school program completion or the equivalent, and meet one of the following:

  1. Have one of the program director qualifications in 8VAC20-780-190;
  2. Have an endorsement or bachelor's degree in a child-related field such as, but not limited to, elementary education, nursing, or recreation, from a college or university;
  3. Have three months of programmatic experience and at least one of the following education backgrounds:
a. A one year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours; b. A child development credential by an organization listed in 22.1- 289.048 of the Code of Virginia; c. A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization; or 4. Have six months of supervised programmatic experience. a. Within six months before being promoted or beginning work or one month after being promoted or beginning work, a minimum of 12 hours of training shall be received related to the care of children, including but not limited to:
  • 1) Child development;
  • 2) Playground safety;
  • 3) Health and safety issues; and
  • 4) Preventing and reporting child abuse and neglect.
b. Such training may take place on site while not supervising children. Such training hours shall increase according to the following:
  • 1) Program leaders hired or promoted after June 1, 2006 16 hours
  • 2) Program leaders hired or promoted after June 1, 2007 20 hours
  • 3) Program leaders hired or promoted after June 1, 2008 24 hours
B. For program leaders of therapeutic child day programs and special needs child day programs, at least three months of programmatic experience shall be in the group care of children with special needs. C. Notwithstanding the experience requirements in subsection A of this section, program leaders at short-term programs may have only one season of programmatic experience, provided that this experience shall include at least 200 hours, of which up to 24 hours can be formal training, working directly with children in a group. Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: One year certification from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.). Upon hire and training, the individual must be able to successfully utilize the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center Member/Guest registration software, Inventory software and Timeclock software. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the following within 30 days of employment: CPR/First Aid/AED CertificationMAT CertificationPre-Service Training Age Requirements: Due to Virginia State Licensing, the individual must be at least 18 years of age. Additional Requirements Fingerprinting is requiredAdditional background investigation(s) is requiredTB testing (skin test) is required. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions and wet or humid conditions (non-weather).The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
